Open Eyes sent relief support to South Sudan after the cataclysmic flooding that has affected more than 780,000 people. Our ministry partner on the ground sent stories and photos. One photo shows a Sudanese church covered in water.

Here’s a testimony from one displaced woman. She is 30 years old and her husband left her with four children. “When the floods increased in September 2021, I had to evacuate from the older settlement to this high land site. The floods affected my livelihood source, and I am suffering because to cross the floodwater is at your own risk. In October, when I and 3 other women were walking across the floodwaters to reach the forest, 6 men ran toward us and caught two women…I managed to escape from the perpetrators without harm.”

Many of the other women in the testimonies were not so fortunate. A shocking number of the testimonies we received detailed violence against women—most of whom are mothers left struggling to forage for food and firewood. One woman told us that she was only spared from sexual assault by proving she’d recently given birth to a baby. The perpetrator took pity on her.

Sudan was already a country in great need, given the long-drawn-out conflict. Now there’s even more migration happening as climate disasters send people searching for food and shelter.

“Working with you has been a treasure and purpose-fulfilling,” said our ministry partner. “Your competency and character are a few resourceful aspects of your inspiration to us.”

We believe that God’s heart is grieved by this violence and tragedy. Please join us in praying fervently for the people of South Sudan who have been displaced by the floodwaters. Lord, in your mercy, receive our prayer!
